Restoring the self: Positive aVect helps improve self-regulation following ego depletion
نویسندگان
چکیده
Previous work has shown that acts of self-regulation appear to deplete a psychological resource, resulting in poorer self-regulation subsequently. Four experiments using assorted manipulations and measures found that positive mood or emotion can counteract ego depletion. After an initial act of self-regulation, participants who watched a comedy video or received a surprise gift self-regulated on various tasks as well as non-depleted participants and signiWcantly better than participants who experienced a sad mood induction, a neutral mood stimulus, or a brief rest period. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. The Effect of Ego Depletion on Arousal of Elite Iranian Swimmers
The purpose of the present study is to examine the effects of ego depletion on arousal of elite Iranian swimmers. The sample comprised elite swimmers invited to the national swimming team as focused and semi focused (36 subjects). The research design was as pre- and post-test—in two phases of ego depletion conditions and the lack of ego depletion conditions in two experimental and control...
متن کاملPredicting mindfulness levels according to ego strength
Mindfulness is conscious attention to the current moment and internal/external personal experiences. Researches showed that mindfulness has a relationship with other psychological variables. Ego strength can be defined such as self-control, self-regulation or other relative variables like self-depletion too. The present study examines the predicting role of ego strength on the relationship with...
متن کاملDoes self-affirmation following ego depletion moderate restrained eaters' explicit preferences for, and implicit associations with, high-calorie foods?
OBJECTIVE The difficulty for chronic dieters (i.e. restrained eaters) in regulating their food intake is a conflict between two apparently incompatible goals: eating enjoyment and weight control. The latter goal consistently relies on the deployment of cognitive resources, and very often on a significant amount of self-control. This study investigated whether self-affirmation might counteract t...

This study is a cross-sectional descriptive correlational and its statistical population was all high school students in Ardabil, which 197 students (102 boys and 95 girls) from four high schools selected using m...
متن کاملThe Influence of Chronic Ego Depletion on Goal Adherence: An Experience Sampling Study
Although ego depletion effects have been widely observed in experiments in which participants perform consecutive self-control tasks, the process of ego depletion remains poorly understood. Using the strength model of self-control, we hypothesized that chronic ego depletion adversely affects goal adherence and that mental effort and motivation are involved in the process of ego depletion. In th...
